Dozen Photo Challenge

Wineberry Vines at Natirar Park

I believe this is my most successful image, because I was able to use the setting sun behind the wineberry vines to darken them, while allowing a rim of light to exist around them.

This assignment was challenging, because I had to train my eye to look for different combinations of colors (i.e. complementary & analogous) and composition techniques in the natural world. It was especially challenging, since the winter can sometimes be quite bleak.

In the future, I will spend more time looking at the same subjects in different light conditions, so that I can see how it changes their appearance. This way, I can determine which conditions highlight the aspects of that subject best!

"I really liked the creativity in all of your images, and I was especially drawn to the repetition image you used. It really makes you think about how patterns are all around us! The image you used as your negative space composition here is really nice as well. With the dead and dark branches poking through the clear blue sky, it gives a nice stark contrast of color. I think the focus is great, because with negative space you can really play around with the subject of the tree and make it pop. My one suggestion for this image is to maybe include less of the tree, to accentuate the negative space surrounding the branches. You could do this by including only a portion of the tree, or perhaps making the tree smaller. Overall though, I love it!"

Alyssa Platt:

I absolutely love the gallery of pictures you've curated for this project. I especially like your photos that focused on different lighting techniques. You have a great eye for interesting lighting which is exemplified by this photo as well as the hard lighting picture. I also thought your repetitive image for the composition portion of the assignment was excellent. I was instantly drawn to the image because of how visually engaging it is. Additionally, the graininess and colors of the photo give it a vintage feel that matches the subject matter perfectly!

Marina, your pictures are so beautiful! This one and the analogous photo were my favorites. This picture of the thorns is so dynamic in so many ways. The detail brought into the picture by the back lighting is incredible and is able to emphasize the texture and color of the plant. The background and foreground blend together so well, with nothing being taken away from the detail within the foreground. The warm colors of the photo compared to the fact that it's a thorny plant is really neat and I think just adds more dimension to the picture. You did such a great job with this challenge overall!

Wow, it's amazing how you've managed to turn an ordinary thing of thorny branches into an amazing, genuinely interesting photograph. The detail that you were able to capture adds a lot of depth to the photo, along with it being perfectly exposed so that nothing is washed out or losing its detail. Additionally, the colors in the photo work together so well to create a warm and soothing feeling. Overall its an awesome photo, I feel like you really found and captured the beauty in even the simplest of things!

Kelsey Bompane to Marina-

I love the photograph you chose as your best, and completely agree. The way it captures beauty in the light and color of the image but detail and a story in the thorns is beautiful. It is a very emotional still photo. You are very talented with close up shots! It takes patience to find the light hitting just right and to not overpower to small details, which you aced. I admire the consistency in design between your collection of photos.

I think the close-up picture you took of the tree trunk was stunning. The side lighting really emphasizes the textures of the trunk and give the image so much character. The choice of this lighting for this photo influenced the mood and the atmosphere of the photograph. It created a visual interest to the tree trunk and made it stand out capturing the attention of the viewer. I love the way the light and the shadows interact created a strong sense of texture and three-dimensional shapes immersing the viewers experience when looking at the image.
